We arrived at Oak Mountain State Park, and had to drive 10 miles inside the park and arrived at the race 15 minutes before the race start. SO my warm up routine consisted of picking up my race packet, pinning my race number on and drinking my hornet juice. Then the cannon went off and so were the 80 runners including myself.
I used the first mile to loosened up and ran about a 8 minute pace. The race consisted of 2 10k loops in the Oak Mountain trail system, with a little bit of road running. After leaving the starting line you run about a 1/2 mile to the trail entrance. The first couple of miles in the trail system are mostly flat with some mild hills up and down. This works you around the back of the mountain. The last 2 1/2 miles of the loop are SEVERE uphills and downhills. no one ran the entire race. NO One. After reaching the road, there was a mile of road running, and then back in for the second loop. I finished the first loop in 1 hour, and the second loop in 1:08. We were then diverted off to the waterfront and a 100 yard dash to the finish.
I am very happy with 37th place out of 71 finishing runners. However, there were a few things I didn't like about the race.
#1 Having to drive an eternity after entering the park.
#2 They use this timing "thing" that is pinned behind your race number, it also stained my shirt.
That is it, otherwise a good race. After a quick shower and a burger at Hamburger Heaven, we headed back east toward Atlanta.
Then, we decided to take Eyrleigh to her first state Highpoint! Cheaha Mountain, AL. This was our first highpoint on 1-8-2005. How times have changed! Check out the new version of the famous foot picture.
